Thank Me Later

June 15 is the official release date for Drakes debut album Thank Me Later. The album has already leaked over the web and I have given it a play-through and overall its a great album from one of the games up and coming stars, yes thats right up and coming because even with success touring with young money this is still his debut album and with so much hype and potential its not clear what Drake will make of his career. A little background info on Aubrey Grahm as we all know he played Jimmy on the popular show Degrassi, Born in Toronto his parents divorced when he was five his father moved to his hometown of Memphis but Aubrey stayed in Canada with his mother where he attended acting school.

He released his first mix tape in February 2006 via his Myspace, In 2009 he released So Far Gone which placed him where he is today, with singles such as "Best I Ever Had", and "Successful" Drake made his way onto mainstream radio where he has been since . This mix tape really made him the rapper he is today with a unique style and a rap and sing kind of guy which appeals well to both the ladies and the fellas. As he says in Forever Remix "Drop a Mix tape that shit sounded like an album who'd've thought a country wide tour would be the outcome",and he was right who would of thought it. Which leaves us to now Thank Me later the highly anticipated debut album with features from Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Jay-z,Young Jeezy,T.I, and Alicia Keys the album has that feel of get to know me I'll be here for a while. Some tracks to look out for are Fireworks featuring Alicia Keys, Miss Me featuring Lil Wayne, and Karaoke. Now we have to wait until June 15 to see how he lives up to the hype many people hate on Drake because of his mainstream music but that doesn't seem to bother me, others just don't think he'll live up to the hype. Anyway he's out here doing his thing and having great success while he's at it.

Ken Griffey Jr. Retires

On Wednesday one of baseball's greats called it quits after 22 seasons. While his glory days came in Seattle, he was somewhat successful in Cincinnati and Chicago. I grew up with Griffey and Sammy Sosa as my favorite players. Lets not forget about the major contributions Griffey has graced the sneaker community with, he has also left his mark in the video game scene with his game Ken Grifffey Jr's Major League Baseball game for the Nintendo 64 and Ken Griffey's Slugfest. He is among the best in almost every offensive category, 5th overall in home runs with 630 in his career and a life time batting average of .284, and 2671 career hits,10 time Gold Glove Winner,1997 American League MVP. Lets be honest here there have been many great ones to play this game but Griffey Jr is close to the best, even with all the injuries he has continuously fought back and continued to play. In my own honest opinion had it not been for the injuries he would be the G.O.A.T.(greatest of all time)Some might remember him as "the kid" while others might remember one of the sweetest swings in baseball, I will remember him for him smile on the field, the famous backwards hat in the Home Run Derby, and his desire to never give up hope . One important part of his career was never being linked to Steroids or any sort of drugs, which in this day and time is rare. He was one one of the best teams ever had they kept that Mariners teams of the 90s together, Griffey, A-Rod, Randy Johnson, and others. Griffeys retirement announcement was kind of random and unexpected Griffey had this to say on his retirement "While I feel I am still able to make a contribution on the field and nobody in the Mariners front office has asked me to retire, I told the Mariners when I met with them prior to the 2009 season and was invited back that I will never allow myself to become a distraction." Its sad to say goodbye to a great player like this but at the age of 40 what else do you expect. Well hats off to Griffey and Thanks for a memorable and CLEAN career.

Graduation Day

So today is the day the rest of the team graduates from Belen. Most have been there since 6th grade, but today will conclude all of their hard work and dedication. A list of all their accomplishments will not fit on this post, but this group includes the student body president, a talented soccer player, a crew member , and many others. We have all been good friends for a while but today marks the day they take a new step in life (I've already graduated). It's hard for me to write about their fun and memories from school but I can share a couple we have have outside of school, such as all those great weekends in Ocean Reef, Guarchapaloozas, a certain Prom After party, and plenty more. One reason for this blog is its a way for us to stay connected as we all go on to different schools in different places( except you J.C. we'll be at X kid). Its wierd the friendship we have seeing how its nearly impossible to do what we did because the whole Belen vs. Columbus thing, but I just want to say say thanks to you four for being there for me the past four years and just cause well be at different schools wont mean we wont stay close because its already happened. I will be at the graduation later on today and might write a follow up.

I just want to say thanks again and Congrats on graduating and moving on. Not siigning this one as sugar water and a mayonnaise sandwich but
Thanks for everything
Brian

Keeping the Faith (mp3 update)

Since Killa forgot, here are some chunes to follow up his "Keepin' the Faith" post.

De La Soul's Keepin' The Faith from their 1991 sophomore album De La Soul is Dead One of my favourite albums of all time and one of the original "Fuck you if you think I have to rap about gangster shit" albums.

Wu-Tang Clan's The Mystery of Chessboxin' from their 1993 Classic album Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) One of the most overlooked songs from the album with the monster C.R.E.A.M., check out Tearz out from that album too, great sampling and the type of originality and creativity combined with risk taking style that doesn't come around every day.

Among the many modern rappers who doesn't receive the praise he deserves, Consequence is a one of those artists with the smooth style that is rare nowadays. He teams up with Kanye West (as he almost always does) to give A Tribe Called Quest a run for their money by rapping over their jam, Electric Relaxation, from their 1993 masterpiece Midnight Marauders

The aforementioned W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E. where D.C. MC Wale spits fire over Justice's D.A.N.C.E. from their 2007 debut Cross. Wale is one of the shining lights for the hope and resurgence of Hip-Hop in 2010, a leader of the 2009 Freshman class who has made some huge strides in his mainstream success while retaining all the underground cred he started with.

Keepin' the Faith

What happened to hip hop? Gone are the days of the immortal crews: N.W.A., A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang Clan, De La Soul, etc. Now we're left with rappers rambling about money, cars, weed, bitches, and partying. Don't get me wrong, there's still some substance out there, there's still some legit good music, but the majority has regressed and what was built up by great minds like Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Nas, Q-Tip, and Tupac is quickly being torn down.

So was Nas right? Is hip hop really dead? I guess not.. There are still some very credible producers and rappers left in the game. Despite all his whining and complaining, you have to give Kanye West some credit; the guy makes some of the best beats out there (hey, if Common and Jay-Z have had him produce the majority of their most recent stuff the guy has to be doing something right). He also has a talent for lyrics and can come up with some good content, at least better than most of the radio shit.

Although someone like Kanye can spit lyrics of substance, no one can tell a story like Raekwon could; no one really has the flow that Method Man did; no one can rap as smoothly as Q-Tip could; no one has that exciting, ridiculous, off the wall rap style like Ol' Dirty Bastard did; no one can bring such attention to the rap game as Biggie and Tupac did. Some do come close, MF Doom, Murs, Wale, K'Naan to name a few, but none are really at the level that the old greats were. I'm open to all types of music (from electro, to hip hop, to indie rock, even to jazz and experimental) yet I find myself downloading more and more rap from the 90s because, quite frankly, I just find a lot of the music being produced now to be annoying. It's frustrating to not be able to find new music that I really like. Every once in a while I stumble across something I really dig but more often than not it's not something released in the last 15 years.

Despite all this, I don't think that all hope is lost. Examples. The Cool Kids have funny lyrics about almost anything (bicycles, fishing for whales, and directions to a party) and Chuck Inglish's production is reminiscent of old school, minimal, bass-heavy beats. Wale can do some incredible stuff lyrically and is an extremely versatile rapper who can rap over your traditional hip hop beat or switch things up and rap over an electro-disco song (W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E.). Murs is also insane lyrically. I guess you can compare him a lot to Raekwon with the story-telling rap style, something impressive and pretty rare. Once again, Kanye West has an incredible talent for music production. Lupe Fiasco, one of the few mainstream artists that I really love, has some really quality production and can really string together strong rap after strong rap making his albums some of the most complete, all killer no filler compilations out there.

I guess I may just be a pessimist and your classic "the old stuff was better" kind of guy, but music always changes direction and I just can't find the substance in the new direction hip hop has taken. Let's just hope hip hop is not dead. I'm keeping the faith.

LeBron is Drakes New Hypeman

Last week at a show in Cleaveland Hip-Hop artist Drake brought out LeBron James to perform on stage with him. This isn't a first for basketball players as Shaq, Kobe, Allen Iverson and Ron Artest all have given rapping a shot. Theres just somthing about a 7 foot 300 pound man on stage rapping that doesn't seem right

heres the video

Lakers/Celtics.....great

I fully appreciate the historical significance of the Lakers/Celtics rivalry. That being said its getting old. While the rivalry of old sported the likes of Magic and Bird, Kareem and Mchale, and of course the always fresh Pat Riley, the storyline has gone stale. The Lakers had "Showtime" and the Celtics had the most fundamentally sound team around. The mecca of the West against arguably the greatest sports city in history (props to Philly on that one). It was the perfect rivalry.

In 2008, the last time the two teams met in the finals, the Celtics "Big 3" emerged to defeat the mighty Lakers, making Boston relevant in the basketball discussion once again. But, this time around the storyline is much less interesting. The Lakers and Celtics are the last two teams to win championships, taking away any David vs. Goliath angle, and frankly I can't decide who to root for.

Everytime I think of the Lakers, I see Phil (because he is too cool to use two Ls) Jackson's pompous face snarling on the bench as he watches the best players money can buy destroy the competition and heralds himself as the best coach in the game. Phil Jackson is a douche, which makes me not want to root for the Lakers
The Zen Master, at his best

On the other hand we have the Celtics, who I was fully behind in '08. However, the Celtics now have their own clown who even rivals the Zen Master. Kevin Garnett has become a poor man's Ron Artest. Complaining every time he gets touched in the post, elbowing a helpless Quentin Richardson, and just acting like an all around child have moved Garnett from one of the most respected players in the NBA, to the sandbox.
Leave Ben Gordon alone, you clown

In the end my choice is being made by an unlikely character. Its easy to demonize Kobe Bryant for what he did (or allegedly did) in his past, but watching his game today is almost inspiring. Kobe has gone from a punk kid to the best leader in the game. Does he have the natural talent of LeBron? Is he as good as Jordan? It doesn't matter. When 24 takes the court he has one goal in mind, and most of the time he succeeds. For as much as we all love to hate Kobe, he is the best leader in basketball. He makes everyone else around him better, something that only the greats can do.
So in the end, I'm going to have to live with Phil Jackson riding his talent to another championship and I'll take the Lakers in six.
